The question you actually need answered
Is Notion AI a reason to switch to Notion, or a reason to stay? After 30 days of testing, the answer is clearly the latter. If your team isn't already living in Notion, no AI feature changes that calculus. But if you are, the upgrade is more useful than we expected - and useful in ways that matter more than the headline writing features.
Most AI writing tools optimize for blank-page generation. Notion AI's real advantage is something quieter: it knows what's already in your workspace. That distinction only matters if your workspace contains something worth knowing.
What we tested
We ran Notion AI through four representative scenarios: maintaining and querying a team wiki across a 200-page workspace, generating first-draft project briefs from meeting notes, summarizing long Notion documents for async review, and using Q&A to retrieve specific details buried in documentation written months prior.
On the Q&A test: We asked "What's our current refund policy for enterprise customers?" against a workspace with 200+ pages. Notion AI returned the correct answer with a source citation in under four seconds. The same search using Notion's standard search took several minutes of manual scanning to confirm. This is the feature that closes the case for knowledge-heavy teams.
The writing features - draft generation, editing, translation, tone adjustment - are competent but not exceptional. They perform roughly on par with a general-purpose AI assistant when given a blank prompt. What differentiates them is context: ask Notion AI to write a project brief and it can pull from your existing project templates and past briefs automatically, if they exist in your workspace.
The Q&A feature deserves its own section
Notion's AI Q&A is the best implementation of workspace search we've tested. Ask it a natural language question and it retrieves the relevant answer from across your entire connected workspace - pages, databases, meeting notes, everything - with a cited source you can navigate to directly.
In practice this means: new team members can self-serve answers to onboarding questions without pinging a senior colleague. Executives can retrieve policy details without knowing which page they live on. Anyone can reconstruct the context behind a past decision without digging through six months of meeting notes.
The limitation is obvious: it only works if the knowledge exists in Notion. Teams with fragmented documentation across Slack, Google Drive, and Confluence will find Q&A less useful until they consolidate. That consolidation effort is real, but Notion AI makes it worth doing.

Where it falls short
The writing features won't replace a dedicated writing assistant for teams that rely heavily on polished external content. Jasper, Copy.ai, or even a direct Claude or GPT integration will outperform Notion AI for brand voice, long-form blog content, or high-volume copy generation. Notion AI is built for internal productivity, not marketing output.
Autofill in databases - which can populate properties like status, priority, and summary automatically - sounds more impressive than it performs. It works well for summaries but struggles with nuanced classification tasks. Plan for manual review.
Who it's right for - and who it isn't
Good fit
- Teams with an established Notion workspace and real documentation
- Knowledge-heavy orgs where self-serve retrieval saves hours
- Engineering and product teams managing specs and decisions in Notion
- Ops teams running SOPs and process documentation
- Remote-first orgs where async context is critical

- Marketing teams needing high-volume or brand-calibrated content

On pricing
Notion AI costs $10 per member per month added to any paid plan. For a 10-person team on the Plus plan, that's an extra $100/month. It's not cheap, but it's competitive with standalone AI writing tools - and unlike those tools, it's embedded in your existing workflow with workspace context.
The free trial gives you 20 AI responses to evaluate it. That's genuinely enough to test Q&A against your own workspace, which is the right test. Don't evaluate it on blank-page writing - evaluate it by asking it something your new hire would ask on day three.
Our verdict
Recommended - for teams already inside Notion.
Notion AI earns its price for any team with a live, maintained Notion workspace. The Q&A feature alone is worth the add-on for knowledge-heavy teams. The writing assistance is a bonus, not the reason to buy.
If you're not yet in Notion, this review isn't the thing that should move you. Evaluate the platform first. If you are in Notion and you've been on the fence about the AI add-on, the fence is probably not the right place to stay.
